While we’ll never disown a trusty chunky knit or simple black turtleneck, fall is serving up some fresh new sweater trends to cuddle up in. Some look like the items you’re used to wearing, but with a twist, while others are of-the-moment styles you may have never considered (like the modern fashion-girl update on the half-zip). Regardless of the cut, color, and fabric, know that cozy oversized sleeves are definitely included. And for that, we’re grateful. Now bring on those autumn temperatures.

Detailed Cuffs

From fuzzy muffs to wrist ties, sweater cuffs are the new area of focus. Think of it as the new elbow patch, but more in-your-face. And who doesn’t love a tiny detail that makes a big splash?

Zara Sweater with Contrasting Fabric Cuffs, $69.90, available at Zara.

Embellishments

The most delicate style of the bunch goes to the embellished sleeve. Between pearl detailing and ruffles, detailed arms make a plain old sweater look anything but boring. If you figure out the best wash-and-dry method for this tricky trend, however, let us know.

Chloé Pompom-embellished Knitted Sweater, $1,195, available at Net-A-Porter.

Half-Zips

Ever since J.W. Anderson rolled out a host of half-zip, mock-neck sweaters, we just can’t seem to get enough of the look. Whether fitted or slightly oversized, this trend looks best with sleeves pushed up and a corner of the hem-tucked into the waist of a wide-leg trouser. Top it off with patent boots, and it looks nothing like a classic pullover.

Silence + Noise Half-zip Striped Sweater, $54, available at Urban Outfitters.

Balloon Sleeves

This past summer we saw balloon sleeves conquer just about every mid- and long-sleeved piece imaginable: cropped tops, tie-waist shirts, and dresses included. Now let them take over your fall favorite, transforming the simplest of knits into voluminous masterpieces.

Dôen Hermione Sweater, $285, available at Dôen.
