But if there is anything we learned from our adventures (and our tea tasting), is that the regular teas you can find on the supermarket shelves don’t even begin to scrape the surface of the amazing flavours and varieties available in countries all around the world!
Today, we want to share a bit about our newest tea discovery – Pu’er Tea.
WHAT IS PU’ER TEA?
Pu’er tea has vintages and can be stored to age like fine wine. This complex tea originates from the mountains of Yunnan, China whose raw materials are made of broad-leaf species that have been sun-dried and undergone an exact production process.
Pu’er can be in the form of loose tea or as compressed shapes , a traditional packaging practice dating back many centuries when it was originally transported by horses to save space along the Old Tea Horse Road. This variety of tea is full of antioxidants and is known to aid in weight loss, reduction of cholesterol, and digestion. It comes in two forms: raw and ripe.
RAW VS. RIPE PU’ER TEA
Raw Pu’er Tea
The raw Pu’er tea is non-fermented and was first consumed over 2000 years ago. Raw tea consists of black and yellow-green tea leaves which once steeped turns a light amber colour and has a mild and pleasant taste. We find it a great tea to sip on throughout the afternoon.
Ripe Pu’er Tea
Ripe Pu’er tea dates back only to the 1970s. The leaves go through a post- fermentation process to produce reddish-brown leaves that yield a mellow yet full flavored dark brown tea with a slight woody aroma.
This variety has a much stronger earthy flavour and a ton of health benefits, similar to the Raw.
Unlike raw Pu’er which requires particular storage to bring out the unique characteristics, Ripe Pu’er tea is ready to drink as soon as it’s fermented and packaged for consumption.
WHERE TO BUY PU’ER TEA?
Pu’er Tea is a lesser known variety of tea suitable for tea connoisseurs and those that appreciate complex flavours and tea traditions. Finding authentic Pu’er Tea online can prove to be a challengehence it is important to buy from a trusted source.
Pu’er Tea is priced at a premium compared to more common tea varieties, which unfortunately leads to many unauthentic producers who slap the Pu’er tea label on non-Pu’er tea in hopes of generating higher profits.
